for Academic Excellence is a department within Hofstra University
aimed at improving undergraduate students success and retention
through its comprehensive academic support services and its
partnership with various campus departments. Reporting to the Dean
of the Center for Academic Excellence, the Success Advisor engages
students in academic self-reflections and skill-building exercises
to proactively support them through academic or other adjustments
which may impact their academic performance or other aspects of
their college experiences. Responsibilities include regular
engagement with students via scheduled academic skill building
meetings, phone and email communications, case management, and
collaboration and consultation with colleagues in other campus
departments and offices. This is a full-time, 10-month position
from mid-August through mid-June.Responsibilities include, but are
not limited to:
- Meets with students to develop and implement personalized,
academic success plans based on the students unique circumstances
and track progress towards their goals.
- Tracks student compliance and progress with academic success
recommendations and follow up as appropriate.
- Assists students with evaluating and developing their academic
skills, including time management, study strategies, note taking,
test taking, goal setting, and motivation.
- Communicates and collaborates with other University departments
to expedite resolution of student academic concerns as
appropriate.
- Provides referrals to other support services within the
University or to community agencies when appropriate.
- Conducts workshops aimed at enhancing students academic and
personal success.
- Serves on departmental or University-wide committees as needed,
including the Administrative Judicial Board for the Office of
Community Standards and participate in all training programs.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the Dean of the
Center for Academic Excellence.Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in education, psychology, or a field of study
that enhances the individuals ability to assist at-risk students in
an academic environment required.
- At least two years of professional experience working with
college students in academic advising, academic support programs,
or other related fields.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, process
confidential information with discretion and adhere to FERPA
guidelines.
- Capacity and desire to interact with individuals of varying
social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and
as part of a team, and to maintain positive professional
relationships.
- Record of successful collaborations with students, faculty,
staff, parents, and community partners.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities and possess
outstanding written and oral communication skills.
- Must possess knowledge in effective learning strategies,
assessment tools, motivational techniques, and study skills
development.
- Excellent conflict resolution skills and ability to multi-task
in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong attention to detail, and ability to gather and
synthesize information from a variety of sources to make
knowledgeable recommendations to best serve students.
- Flexible hours, including one or two evening shifts and
occasional weekend assignments.Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working as part of case management support team
preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of online student tracking systems and
database management.
- Strong quantitative reasoning and comfort level with
appropriate technologies (e.g., Microsoft Excel).Special
