DescriptionThe Staff Nurse in Labor and Delivery has skills and
competence in Prenatal Nursing and works within the scope of
regulatory standards relating to AWHONN, NYSDOH 495.21 Maternity
and Newborn Services, policies and procedures as set forward by
Health + Hospitals Coney Island.Specific Duties And
ResponsibilitiesThe Staff Nurse in Labor and Delivery is in charge
and responsible for:
- Triages patients through the obstetrical emergency room
employing the H+H Obstetrical Triage Acuity Scoring and provides
timely notification to the provider staff based on the score.
- Applies external fetal monitor and categories fetal heart
tracing utilizing NICHD approved terminology.
- Completes assessments on patients per established
protocols.
- Maintains on-going assessment of fetal heart rate pattern and
maternal status during labor.
- Identifies emergency situation including changes in fetal heart
rate pattern, changes in maternal physiological, neurologic and
psychological status and promptly initiates actions including
timely provider notification.
- Assists with the procedures such as application of fetal scalp
electrode (FSE), intrauterine pressure catheter (IUPC) Cooks
balloon and Bakri placement.
- Demonstrates proficiency and competency during OB emergencies
such as shoulder dystocia, maternal hemorrhage, hypertensive
crisis, eclampsia, etc.
- Utilizes BCMA for the safe administration of all medications
including high risk medications including Pitocin, Magnesium
Sulfate and Insulin.
- Demonstrates competency as the circulating and scrub nurse;
utilizing aseptic techniques as required.
- Completes APGAR scoring on newborns at one and five minutes of
life in collaboration with the provider at delivery.
- Performs initial steps of neonatal resuscitation and newborn
stabilization.
- Completes admission assessment of newborn, identifies changes
in newborn's condition, initiates appropriate interventions
including timely provider notification.
- Monitors and documents the hemodynamic status of the postpartum
and post cesarean patient.
- Performs nursing skills and interventions efficiently, safely,
consistently and cost-effectively.
- Exhibits an understanding of established obstetrical-newborn
standards of care; maintains accountability for care
delivered.
- Demonstrates an awareness of patient's rights by supporting the
family centered concept of care, allowing father/significant other
to be present during labor and at birth whenever possible.
- Identifies patient/family learning needs (age appropriate) and
teaches appropriate principles and procedures related to care in
relation to age, with focus on adolescent mothers.
- In collaboration with patients and the interdisciplinary team,
identifies and documents plan of care reflective of the primary and
secondary diagnosis.
- Demonstrates the ability to safely organize and prioritizes
care within a reasonable time for patient and unit management as
the Charge Nurse.
- Directs and coordinates unit activities including delegation of
assignment and tasks to nursing and clerical personnel.
- Demonstrates awareness of AWHONN standards of care for maternal
and newborn patients.
- Meets all mandatory requirements such as annual physical
assessment and trainings
- Enhances personal and professional development through
attendance to internal in-service and external educational
offerings.Minimum Qualifications
- A valid New York State license and current registration to
practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State;
and
- Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and
current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the
American Heart Association (AHA).Special NoteFor assignments in
Post-Acute Care ONLY, individuals meeting the following criteria
may also be considered for appointment: Graduation from a nursing
education program registered by the New York State Education
Department (NYSED) as licensure qualifying for Registered
Professional Nurse (RN) and has applied for licensure as an RN.
These unlicensed individuals may be employed to practice under the
immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently
registered, RN for up to 90 days immediately following graduation
pending receipt of a limited permit, which selected candidates must
apply for and receive within the same 90-day period. Once a limited
permit is received, individuals can practice nursing, under the
immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently
registered, RN at a NYC Health + Hospitals health care setting for
up to one (1) year from the date of issuance of the limited permit.
In addition, must hold or obtain through facility orientation, a
valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through
